Maleny Fixit Café
Maleny now has Australia’s very first European style Repair Café operating from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre
Started in Amsterdam in 2009, Repair Cafés are becoming increasingly popular in Europe, with another opening recently in London.
It’s a simple concept. People bring items to be repaired or learn how to repair them. Volunteers work on the items and this all takes place in a café style environment.
Volunteers are often older members of the community with skills that are fast becoming lost. The repaired items can then be used instead of ending up in landfill.
The Maleny Fixit Café commenced operation on 22 November 2012 and operates every second Thursday between 10am and 2pm, coinciding with the Community Lunch on the same day. This lunch is available to all members of the community by donation.
For fixed item, a donation of approximately $5.00 is requested to help cover the cost of fixing products, with the balance donated to the Neighbourhood Centre. All work is carried out by volunteers, however, if the volunteers are unable to fix any item, they may be able to refer you to someone who can.
If you are interested in becoming a Fixit volunteer, you can leave your contact details at the Neighbourhood Centre and a member of the Fixit Café will be in touch.
