MNC Maleny Transition House Project – Brief description of Project:
Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) is all too aware of the housing needs of:
single older women;
women experiencing homelessness; and
women moving out of unsafe housing situations.
MNC has found that assisting women to move into more stable housing can often take 2-3 months.
Over the last couple of years the MNC has tried different options to secure grant funding and to work in partnership with local individuals, organisations and businesses to test the viability of a community managed share house.
MNC proposes that a consortium of interested individuals and organisations agree to establish a local share house to provide safe temporary housing for women or women and children as they make the transition to long-term housing.
Goals of the Share House Maleny Project
To establish transition accommodation in Maleny for women and children from Maleny and the surrounding area who need to move from unstable, over crowded, inappropriate, unaffordable and insecure accommodation into longer appropriate and physically secure housing.
To provide short to medium term transition housing. The Share House is not a women’s shelter for women fleeing domestic violence.
To test and document the systems and costs of operating a Share House as outlined in this policy document.
