welcome to maleny ay mnc ‘Welcome To Maleny’ (W2M) formed one year ago during Refugee Week as a result of an encouraging response to a ‘Community Conversations’ meeting held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

The central theme of the forum was: how can the Maleny community support refugees and learn more about people who seek asylum?

This was in keeping with the Refugee Week theme ‘With courage let us all combine’, (the 2nd verse of our national anthem) which continues into 2017. For a year W2M has been actively and effectively finding ways to support refugees in diverse, creative and compassionate ways and have received overwhelming support from the Maleny community to do so.

Refugee Week 2017: ‘With courage let us all combine’

It is with great pleasure to announce that local refugee support group, ‘Welcome to Maleny’ will be hosting a FREE screening of multi award-winning
documentary, Freedom Stories in the Maleny R.S.L. on Saturday 17th June, with doors opening at 5pm for a 5:30pm start. This event is part of national celebrations of Refugee Week 2017.

There will be food available for purchase by local foodies ‘Tashan’, as well as complimentary tea and coffee. The R.S.L will also be running a licensed bar.

Freedom Stories is a multi award-winning documentary (rated PG) by acclaimed filmmaker, Steve Thomas.

It explores the achievements and stories of former ‘boat people’ who arrived in Australian waters seeking asylum from the Middle East around 2001, a defining year in Australian politics. Locked in remote detention centres, both on and offshore, and then placed on temporary protection visas, their limbo lasted for years.

Now Australian citizens, the people who have participated in this documentary are finally building secure lives and contributing to their new country. These are ordinary people who found themselves caught up in the extraordinary consequences of political brinkmanship but have long since dropped out of the media spotlight. They live among us now and given the Government’s boast that it has ‘stopped the boats’ it is time for their voices to be heard.

Come help us celebrate Refugee Week 2017 in Maleny and ‘With courage let us all combine’.
